The internet and the advances in image acquisition and storage technology have led to tremendous growth in significantly large and detailed image databases (the World Wide Web is regarded as the largest global image repository). By analyzing these images the human users could obtain much more useful information. Image mining is a tool to analyze the images that have the same subject by dealing with the extraction of implicit knowledge, image data relationships, or other patterns not explicitly stored in the images. This book proposes a system for mining the images by a proposed association rule algorithm which will consider the recurrence of objects in the unique image in addition to the traditional consideration of objects recurrent in a collection of images.

The quality of software is one of the most critical concerns in software development. As quality assessment of a software product is harder than that of other industrial products, many fail to meet the quality objectives when completed. The software quality is highly affected by the development process’ actual dynamics. This thesis proposes a simulation model based on the Markov Decision Process (MDP) for quality assessment of software products since MDP is a useful technique to abstact the model of the development process dynamics and to test their impact on quality. It aims to show how the simulation techniques can be used to assess software quality at the early stages of project development. The proposed approach is based on the stochastic nature of the software development process, including project architecture, team assignment and Software Quality Assurance (SQA) system construction strategy, and qualification actions selected in the SQA system. The simulation model accepts these factors as inputs, and generates a relative quality degree as its output. The results prove its robustness and capability in identifying appropriate policies in terms of quality, cost and time.

This book presents Organisational Sustainability Modelling (OSM), a new method to model and analyse risk and return systematically for Cloud Computing. Return includes improvements in technical efficiency, profitability and service. Risk includes controlled risk (risk-control rate) and uncontrolled risk (beta), although uncontrolled risk cannot be evaluated directly. Three OSM metrics, actual return value, expected return value and risk control rate are used to calculate uncontrolled risk. The OSM data collection process in which hundreds of datasets are used as inputs is explained. Outputs including standard error, mean squared error, Durbin-Watson, p-value and R-squared value are calculated. Visualisation is used to illustrate quality and accuracy of data analysis. The metrics, process and interpretation of data analysis is presented and the rationale is explained in the review of the OSM method. Three case studies are used to illustrate the validity of OSM. All three case studies confirm there are benefits for the adoption of Cloud. Together these demonstrations answer the two research questions for this book. OSM has been adopted by several organisations.

Nowadays, GPUs are multi-core parallel processors with very high memory bandwidth. Recently for last few years developers and researchers are offloading computationally intensive tasks to GPUs to gain significant speedup compared to the CPU. Most of the image processing algorithms perform same operation on a large number of pixels, which can be parallelized on single instruction multiple data GPU architecture. Initially shader based frameworks like GLSL, Cg etc have been used for GP-GPU. NVIDIA has developed CUDA to write scalable parallel programs in C like language. GLSL, Cg and CUDA provide significant speedup, however they offer complex integration frameworks and require specialized programming skills. Most of GPU based frameworks are developed using procedural programming, which limits the scope of flexibility, code reusability, information and complexity hiding. In this book, we bring in an object oriented framework for the CUDA based image processing. We demonstrate a set of design patterns exploiting programming advantages of an object oriented language, such as encapsulation, information hiding, code reusability, complexity hiding and extensibility.

The use of information and communications technology (ICT) in teaching-learning process is a relatively new phenomenon and it has been the educational researchers’ focus of attention for more than two decades. The effective integration of technology into classroom practices poses a challenge to teachers and administrators. This research focuses on determining factors influencing use of ICT to make teaching-learning effective in higher institutions of learning in Uganda and identify the innovations that ICT has brought in teaching-learning process in higher institutions of learning in Uganda. A survey design was employed and in order to empirically investigate the role of ICT to make teaching-learning effective in higher institutions of learning in Uganda. 78% of a sample of 90 teaching staff and 41% of a sample of 75 administrators participated in the study. Chi square test and weighted average using SPSS software were used to analyse and interpret the data. The findings of the study revealed that teaching staff and administrators had a strong desire to integrate ICT into teaching-learning processes which are influenced by many factors.
