Molecular Breeding approaches for Yellow Stem Borer resistance in Rice is difficult due to complex genetic of the character and inherent difficulties in screening. Mapping of QTL’s linked to traits would improve the phenotypic evaluation for the trait and F8 population was developed using parents contrasting in the reaction to the yellow stem borer resistance. Simple Sequence Repeat Analysis enabled as to identify phenotypic specific SSR markers. The marker phenotype association analysis involving single marker analysis (SMA) resulted in the detection of two markers viz., RM104 and RM314 associated with Dead Heart symptoms. The SMA carried out in the present study both by ANOVA and linear regression involving the SSR marker data and the phenotypic data associated with YSB resistance resulted in the association of RM104 on chromosome 1 with deadheart incidence under both glass house and field conditions. Scoring the linker markers in the set of germplasm confirmed that reproducibility and their association to resistance.

Meristems isolated from shoot tips of field grown mature garlic bulbs of five cultivars were cultured in liquid MS medium with 2ip and NAA for shoot proliferation. In vitro bulblets were produced from meristem derived shoot clumps in MS with high levels of sucrose. Rooted plantlets with bulblets were gradually acclimatized and successfully established in the field. Visual evaluation of the morphological traits of the meristem derived plants showed that all plants were normal and free from virus diseases. Substantial yield increase was observed from meristem derived plants over their source plants. Shoot tip, leaf base, leaf primordia and bulbil from field grown mature garlic bulbs of five cultivars were cultured in MS medium with 2,4-D for callus induction. The calli were transferred to MS medium without any growth regulators for somatic embryogenesis. Plantlet regeneration from somatic embryos was obtained in KIN supplemented MS media. After proper acclimatization rooted callus derived plantlets with bulblets were transplanted in the field and somaclonal variation were found in plant height, number of leaves/plant, bulb diameter/plant, and bulb weight/plant.

The Mitsunobu reaction is very important reaction for the synthesis of ether from phenol and alcohol. The [7-methoxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-benzofuran-5-yl]methanol (2) was synthesised from vanillin by using series of known reactions such as Mannich reaction, acetylation, hydrolysis, Wittig raction, hydrobation. This methanol benzofuran derivative (2) condensed with 4-fluorophenol by using DEAD in THF. The final product 5-[(4-fluorophenoxy)methyl]-7-methoxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-benzofuran (3) was characterised by using IR, NMR and mass spectra and study their biological activity by molecular docking using molecular docking software Glide. The activity of ether (3) was compared to their amine analogue.

The Labour Government’s proposals for reform of the UK’s internal constitutional arrangements promise the most wide-ranging and substantial overhaul of the constitution this century. Their plans,which include devolution for Scotland and Wales, incorporation of the ECHR, a Freedom of Information Bill and reform of both houses of Parliament are already far progressed, but critical choices have still to be made. Against this background, and in view of these historical events, the Directors of the Centre for Public Law at the University of Cambridge recently organised a major conference to discuss the legal and practical implications of the proposed reforms. Speakers at the conference included leading academics, barristers, solicitors, judges and politicians. The results, which are reproduced in this volume of conference proceedings, will be essential reading for all those interested in constitutional reform and in British political history.

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is highly perishable in nature and cannot be stored as such for longer periods in ambient condition. The losses can be minimized by converting into different by-products. The dehydrated papaya powder holds a promising and potential market. The pulp was subjected to produce stable foam by using methyl cellulose, glycerol-mono-stearate and egg albumin as foaming agents with selected levels. The stable foam was dried at 60, 65 and 70 degree Celsius. Biochemical analysis of papaya powder showed a significant reduction in ascorbic acid, ?-carotene and total sugars in the foamed papaya dried product at higher foam thickness (6 and 8 mm) and temperature (65 and 70°C) due to destruction at higher drying temperature and increasing time. There was no significant change in other biochemical constituents such as pH and acidity. The sensory evaluation of the quality attributes of papaya powder obtained from the pulp treated with glycerol-mono-stearate and dried at 60°C was found to be optimum to produce powder. The foam-mat drying is a good alternative to other drying processes, also, a promising potential for the food and fruit processing industry.

Early precautionary measures can be taken to minimize the impact on environment by accurately finding whether the proposed development projects are located within environmentally sensitive areas or not. Therefore, it is very useful to identify and map such areas in separate spatial data layers in order to assist the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process at early stages of project planning. Remote Sensing(RS) and Geographical Information System(GIS) provides a great potential for identifying and mapping of such area and very little academic literature exists on how to best utilize these technologies for environmental studies. Traditional approaches to data collection and updating no longer adequate to provide updated information for environmentalists. This book, therefore, introduces alternative techniques for data collection, updating, identifying and mapping of environmentally sensitive areas using RS and GIS. These techniques should help to shed light on these new and existing RS and GIS technologies, and should be especially useful to students and professionals in environmental science or anyone else who may be considering utilizing RS and GIS for environmental studies.
